An itinerant travel-initiation stay in the Maltese archipelago for teenagers aged 14 to 17. With a rucksack and good shoes, the group learns the basics of independent travel: finding accommodation, working out a bus route, getting by in a country whose language you do not speak. The group meets before departure to prepare the trip and choose the visits together, then moves between Malta and Gozo, sleeping in youth hostels or apartments and eating at the market, in restaurants or from its own cooking.

About

About the Course

The operator calls this a project of initiation into travel. With a rucksack and good shoes, teenagers aged 14 to 17 learn the basics of itinerancy: finding a place to sleep, working out which bus to take, getting by in a country whose language they do not speak — skills the operator says will serve them on their next trip round the world. Once the group is formed it meets before departure to prepare the stay together and to choose the visits and activities collectively, so the itinerary is the group's own.

What’s Included

The price quoted per child covers the travel from the departure town, the flight to Malta, the accommodation on both islands and the programme chosen by the group. Travel insurance is charged separately and is not part of the quoted figure. Meals are not a fixed board arrangement: they are taken as the trip goes — at the market, in a restaurant, or cooked by the group. Departure is from Clermont-Ferrand by public transport, then by plane; on the islands the group moves by public transport.

Accommodation

To make the most of both islands, the accommodation is split across two sites, one on Malta and one on Gozo. The group sleeps in youth hostels or in apartments, as the itinerary requires. The operator does not publish the room arrangement for either site.

Meal Plan

There is no fixed board arrangement, and that is part of the programme: meals are taken as the adventure goes — at the market, in a restaurant, or cooked by the group itself. Shopping and cooking for the group is one of the practical skills the stay sets out to teach.

Activities & Excursions

The group chooses its own programme before departure, from ideas the operator publishes: Valletta, the capital listed as a UNESCO world heritage site; the fortified cities of Birgu, Bormla and Senglea; the former capital Mdina; turquoise beaches such as the Blue Lagoon and Golden Bay, good for snorkelling; sea caves; the islands of Saint Paul; and the Blue Grotto, reached by boat. Walking and public transport between them is the method as much as the means.

Facilities

The programme has no single base: the group is housed on two sites, one on Malta and one on Gozo, in youth hostels or apartments, and moves between them by public transport. The operator publishes no list of facilities at either site.

Camp Experience

The Maltese archipelago was chosen for spectacular natural sites, a dense history, a Mediterranean climate — and because English is an official language, which the bilingual team turns into a set of challenges for the group. What a teenager takes home from this one is not a set of photographs of monuments but the discovery that they can arrive somewhere unfamiliar and work out how to get around it.

Fédération des Aroéven

The Fédération des Aroéven is a French non-profit education federation — Fédération des Œuvres Éducatives et de Vacances de l'Éducation Nationale — recognised as an organisation of public utility. It works as a complementary educational association of the French state school system, as a youth and popular-education federation, and as a movement for pedagogical research and practice. Through its regional Aroéven associations it runs residential holiday stays for children and teenagers in France and abroad, in the mountains, in the countryside and in European cities, alongside BAFA and BAFD youth-leader training and school trips. Each stay is organised by one of the regional associations, while booking and payment for all of them are handled centrally by the federation on its own site. Groups are led by qualified animateurs and the educational project is published by the federation.

More about this camp

This is an itinerant stay rather than a camp with a base. Teenagers aged 14 to 17 travel the Maltese archipelago with a rucksack, learning what the operator calls the basics of itinerancy: how to find accommodation, how to read a bus network, how to manage in a country whose language they do not speak. The group is formed before departure and meets to prepare the trip together, choosing its visits and activities collectively, so no two editions of the stay are the same.\n\nThe ideas the operator puts on the table are the obvious riches of the islands: Valletta, the capital listed by UNESCO; the fortified cities of Birgu, Bormla and Senglea; Mdina, the former capital; the turquoise water of the Blue Lagoon and Golden Bay, good for snorkelling; the sea caves, the islands of Saint Paul, and the Blue Grotto reached by boat. Accommodation is split between Malta and Gozo so that both islands can be used properly, in youth hostels or apartments, and the group moves by public transport.\n\nMeals are part of the lesson: taken at the market, in a restaurant, or cooked by the group, depending on where the day ends. The archipelago was chosen for its natural sites, its history, its Mediterranean climate and because English is an official language there — which the bilingual team turns into a set of challenges. The stay is organised by the Aroéven of Clermont-Ferrand; travel is by public transport to the airport and then by plane. Insurance is charged on top of the quoted price.
