About

About the Course

Teenagers follow the Vacation English Plus course, a general English programme built around speaking and communication. Lessons run in the morning and use the school's own young-learner coursebooks, with projects, role plays and discussion rather than textbook drills. On the first day every student takes a placement assessment and a short consultation, and is then placed in a level-matched class. Average class size is fifteen students and the maximum is seventeen, and the programme is open to all levels.

What’s Included

The camp is sold in two forms. The full package brings together tuition, accommodation at the Centre Residence, meals, the daily activity and excursion programme and return airport transfers, and suits teenagers travelling on their own. The daytime programme covers tuition, a packed lunch on school days and the daytime activities, and is aimed at teenagers who come to Malta with a parent or guardian. Registration and accommodation placement are included in the young-learner rates; insurance is arranged separately.

Accommodation

Full-package students stay at the Centre Residence, a short walk from the Sliema school and minutes from the seafront. Rooms are modern, air-conditioned and shared, sleeping two, three or four students. Host-family accommodation is offered as an alternative for students who want to live with a Maltese family and practise English at home; students placed more than a thirty-minute walk from school are given transport. A member of the school team or a host family member meets students on arrival and helps with check-in.

Meal Plan

Breakfast and dinner are provided at the accommodation and a packed lunch is given at school, so full-package students are covered for meals across the day. Students on the daytime programme receive a packed lunch at school on school days. A supplement is available for host-family students who need a special diet, and it is charged per week.

Activities & Excursions

Afternoons, evenings and weekends are built around a supervised activity and excursion programme that takes students out around the island. Excursions are part of the full package and of the daytime programme, so students practise English in real situations rather than only in the classroom. The school describes the aim as combining serious study with an enjoyable stay in Malta.

Facilities

Classes are held at the IELS school in Sliema, on Malta's central east coast, within easy reach of the promenade and the town's shops and cafes. The Centre Residence sits within walking distance of the school, which keeps daily travel short. Rooms at the residence are air-conditioned, and the school runs its own accommodation and housekeeping operation.

Camp Experience

Malta gives teenagers an English-speaking setting with a Mediterranean summer, and the camp is designed around that combination: mornings in class, afternoons and evenings out with the group. Students come from many different countries, so classes and activities are genuinely international. The school has been running English courses for more than forty years and is based in one of Malta's busiest seaside towns.

More about this camp

The IELS Malta Young Learners Summer Camp is based at the school's centre in Sliema, one of Malta's busiest seaside towns and a short walk from the promenade. The camp is designed for teenagers aged thirteen to seventeen, and the school notes that these ages are a guide rather than a hard rule. Mornings are given over to English. The Vacation English Plus course runs for twenty lessons a week, which the school states is equal to fifteen hours of classroom time. Classes are level-matched: every student takes a placement assessment and a short consultation on the first day and is then placed in the group that fits. Average class size is fifteen students, with a maximum of seventeen, and the course is open to all levels. Teaching uses the school's own young-learner materials and is built around speaking, with projects, role plays and discussion instead of textbook drills. Afternoons, evenings and weekends belong to the activity and excursion programme. Groups travel around the island, so the English practised in class carries over into ordinary situations outside it. Excursions are part of both the full package and the daytime programme. The camp is offered in two forms. The full package suits teenagers travelling on their own: it covers tuition, accommodation, meals, the activity and excursion programme, and airport transfers in both directions. Full-package students stay at the Centre Residence, which is within walking distance of the school and minutes from the seafront; rooms are modern, air-conditioned and shared, sleeping two, three or four students. Host families are offered as an alternative for students who would rather live with a Maltese household and use their English at home, with transport provided for anyone placed more than a thirty-minute walk from school. A member of the school team or a host family member meets students on arrival and helps them settle in. Meals follow the accommodation: breakfast and dinner at the residence or with the host family, and a packed lunch at school. Students on the daytime programme receive a packed lunch on school days and join the daytime activities, but arrange their own accommodation, meals at other times and transfers. That option is intended for teenagers who come to Malta with a parent or guardian. Registration and accommodation placement are included in the young-learner rates. Insurance is not part of the package and can be arranged separately through the school, as can an unaccompanied-minor service for the flight and a special-diet supplement for host-family students. Stays start from one week, and longer stays are built by adding weeks to the first one. Malta suits families who want an English-speaking destination with a Mediterranean summer and short travel distances. The school has been teaching English for more than forty years and draws students from many countries, so classes and activity groups are mixed and international.
