Summer in Switzerland is the residential summer programme of Leysin American School, held on the school's campus in the Swiss Alps and running since 1949. It takes two age groups: a Junior Program for ages 9 to 12 and a Senior Program for ages 13 to 16. Mornings are spent on one of three tracks chosen before arrival — Language Acquisition in English or French, Leadership, or Enrichment. Afternoons bring a club that each student keeps for the whole session (Team Sports, Cooking and Baking, Hiking and Climbing, Music and Video Production, Visual Arts or Tennis) followed by a different activity each day, from horseback riding to ice skating. Evenings are themed, and the session closes with a Final Banquet.

About

About the Course

Mornings are spent on one of three tracks, chosen before arrival and kept for the session: Language Acquisition, where students work on English or French; Leadership, for those drawn to running things; or Enrichment, a spread of summer subjects. The Junior Program takes ages 9 to 12 and the Senior Program ages 13 to 16.

What’s Included

The session fee covers tuition, accommodation on campus, meals, the afternoon and evening programme, and transport between Geneva Airport and the school on official arrival and departure days. The Leadership Track carries an additional course fee, and the overnight European Adventures are booked separately. Students who stay for both sessions are given special programming in the days between them.

Accommodation

Students live in dorms on the LAS campus in Leysin, among students of the same age and gender group. Roommates are deliberately paired across languages, so that children who share a first language are not put together and English is the language of the room.

Meal Plan

Meals are provided on campus for the whole session.

Activities & Excursions

Each afternoon starts with a club the student keeps for the whole session — Team Sports, Cooking and Baking, Hiking and Climbing, Music and Video Production, Visual Arts or Tennis — and is followed by an activity that changes daily. Past activities have included floor hockey, beach volleyball, dirt biking, ukulele lessons, painting and drawing, yoga, hiking, tie-dye, football and dance. Evenings are themed, from sports nights to fireside evenings, and the session ends with the Final Banquet.

Facilities

The programme runs on the school’s own Alpine campus in Leysin, in the canton of Vaud, with residence accommodation for all participants.

Camp Experience

Leysin American School has run its residential summer programme since 1949. It is a boarding school campus in the Swiss Alps turned over to a summer intake, which is why the day is structured like school — a morning track, an afternoon club, an activity, an evening event — rather than left open. Students come from outside the school as well as from it, and are separated by language in their rooms so that English is what gets spoken.

More about this camp

Summer in Switzerland is run by Leysin American School on its own campus above the Rhône valley, and it has been running since 1949. There are two age groups: a Junior Program for students aged 9 to 12 and a Senior Program for those aged 13 to 16. The morning belongs to one track, chosen before arrival and kept for the whole session. Language Acquisition is for students working on English or French. Leadership is for those who want to run things. Enrichment is a spread of summer subjects for students who would rather sample than specialise. Afternoons begin with a club — Team Sports, Cooking and Baking, Hiking and Climbing, Music and Video Production, Visual Arts or Tennis — which each student keeps for the session, so there is time to get somewhere with it. After the club comes a daily activity, and the list is long enough that a student could do something different every day: floor hockey, beach volleyball, dirt biking, ukulele lessons, painting and drawing, yoga, hiking, tie-dye, football, dance. Evenings are themed, and the session closes with the Final Banquet. Students live in dorms on campus among others of their own age and gender group. Roommates are paired across languages on purpose: children who share a first language are not put in a room together, which is what makes English the working language of the dorm as well as the classroom. Transport between Geneva Airport and the school is arranged by the school on official arrival and departure days.
