About

About the Course

Learning at the camp does not follow a classic language or academic model with lessons. The program is built around five major thematic areas: Early Discovery, Sports & Adventure, Arts & Media, Science & Success, and Leadership. The focus is on experiential skill development, participation, and fun, not on formal language instruction. Classes are tailored to the student's level and are held in small groups, ensuring personalized attention and a safe, supportive learning environment. Learning extends beyond the classroom through immersive, experiential activities (games, debates, film festivals) that encourage the free use of English in real-life situations and introduce Canadian culture.

What’s Included

The base program fee includes: tuition and materials; shared on-campus accommodation; three buffet-style meals daily plus snacks; airport transfers and all local transportation; all costs for supervised excursions; emergency medical insurance; and upon completion, a certificate, an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) ESL credit, and a comprehensive learning report. The fee does not include airfare, travel permit fees, custodianship notarization, or personal spending money.

Accommodation

Accommodation includes on-campus boarding in one of four air-conditioned boarding houses. Participants stay in double rooms with shared bathrooms, intentionally paired with a roommate from a different language background to encourage English use and cross-cultural friendship. Facilities include cozy common rooms with games (pool, table tennis), a stocked fridge, a microwave, free self-service laundry, and campus-wide Wi-Fi. 24/7 supervision is provided by live-in boarding staff certified in First Aid/CPR, supplemented by on-campus security and a health centre.

Meal Plan

The program operates on a full board basis. Three nutritious, buffet-style hot meals are prepared daily on-site by the college's culinary team and served in a beautiful dining hall. Fresh fruit and snacks are always available. The program can accommodate most dietary needs and allergies with care and attention, provided all restrictions are listed at the time of application.

Activities & Excursions

Activities are diverse, designed for cultural immersion, fun, and community building. The program features three fully-supervised excursions per week to major regional attractions. Evening programming includes organized sports (archery, rock climbing, volleyball), creative workshops (tie-dye, visual arts), social events (talent shows, karaoke, campfires), and seminars, all led by boarding staff to foster connection.

Facilities

The scenic lakefront campus features top-tier facilities, including modern classrooms and extensive sports amenities: a 3-storey indoor rock-climbing wall, gymnasium, indoor pool, tennis courts, soccer fields, and beach volleyball courts. Boarding houses have common rooms for socializing. The program also utilizes exceptional off-campus venues for activities, such as the Royal Botanical Gardens for canoeing and Treetop Trekking parks for adventure.

This four-week Summer ESL program is designed for international students aged 12 to 17 and aims to rapidly improve English communication skills. Its unique feature is a holistic "experiential learning" approach, integrating academic classroom lessons with language practice during excursions, activities, and life in an international campus environment, fostering student confidence and a sense of belonging in a global community.

Classes are conducted in small groups to ensure personalized attention and are tailored to the student's English proficiency level. The curriculum focuses on the academic aspects of the language, including reading and writing. Students are required to bring their own laptops for projects and classwork. Learning extends beyond traditional classroom instruction. The methodology emphasizes language acquisition through communication and practice in real-life situations. This is achieved through experiential activities such as games, debates, leadership programs, and an annual student film festival, which encourage students to actively use English while learning about Canadian culture.

The course is focused on the acquisition of language through communication, encouraging students to practice and improve their English skills in real-life situations.

More about this camp

This summer camp is run by Appleby on its 60-acre lakeside campus in Oakville, Ontario, Canada, between Toronto and the shore of Lake Ontario. It is residential and accepts students across a 10 to 17 range, split by programme. Programme and activities. Three options are listed. The Summer Enrichment Camp and Summer ESL programme are for ages 12 to 17 — the ESL strand focusing on English, the enrichment strand broader. The Canadian Experience Camp is for the younger group, ages 10 to 12, and is pitched at a first taste of a Canadian summer. Because eligibility depends on the programme, families should choose the strand that matches their child's age and aim rather than treating the camp as one offering. Accommodation. Campers stay on campus in one of four air-conditioned boarding houses, in double rooms. Air conditioning is worth noting for an Ontario summer, and the lakeside site supports water and outdoor activity without leaving the grounds. Ages, dates and duration. The overall range is 10 to 17, split as above. Sessions run from late June and early July, with two to three dates per programme. Location and travel. Oakville is on Lake Ontario, around forty minutes from Toronto Pearson Airport, which is the practical gateway for international families. Transfer arrangements are not published and should be confirmed. Families travelling from outside Canada should check entry requirements well in advance. Who the programme may suit. This camp may suit families who want a Canadian rather than European or UK summer, with a genuine lakeside campus and air-conditioned accommodation, and who value age-appropriate programmes rather than one mixed group. Those specifically wanting English tuition have the ESL strand; those wanting a broader experience have the enrichment and Canadian Experience options. Confirm which programme fits before booking, since the age bands do not overlap fully.
