A wilderness camp in Saxony where children learn the basics of staying safe and comfortable outdoors. Over the week the group builds shelters, lights fires, makes a water filter, navigates with map and compass, ties knots and builds a bridge, and works through outdoor first aid, stretcher building, emergency behaviour, morse and distress signals. Adventure education runs alongside: carving with knife and wood, making things from natural materials, geocaching and stargazing. The camp is based at the children's holiday centre near Weisswasser on eight hectares of largely wooded ground that borders the Braunsteich lake, with the surrounding forest mostly under nature protection. Equipment and materials are provided and the activities are led by trained staff.

About

About the Course

The camp teaches the groundwork of surviving comfortably outdoors, and it teaches it by doing. The techniques strand covers building a shelter, lighting a fire, making a water filter, finding the way in open country with map and compass, tying knots and building a bridge. A safety strand covers first aid outdoors, building a stretcher, how to behave in an emergency, and signalling by morse and distress signs. A third strand is adventure education: handling a carving knife and wood, making things from natural materials, geocaching and watching the stars. The operator supplies the adventure-education materials and the equipment, and trained staff lead and run each activity.

What’s Included

The stay runs seven travel days with six nights. Accommodation in a multi-bed room with bed linen, full board with breakfast, lunch and dinner and drinks round the clock, professional leadership of the activities, the adventure-education materials and equipment, and supervision of participants by day and by night are all included. The operator states that its price covers all the listed services with no separate service or handling fee, and that its own booking terms form part of the trip.

Accommodation

Children sleep in bungalows on the grounds of the holiday centre, in rooms of four to six beds, with bed linen provided. Girls and boys sleep separately. Each bungalow has a counsellor's room of its own, so that staff are close to the children at night as well. The washing facilities are a short distance from the bungalows.

Meal Plan

Three full meals a day. Breakfast and dinner are served as a buffet and lunch is a hot meal, with drinks available round the clock. For a day trip the group is given food to take along.

Activities & Excursions

The programme itself is the activity: shelters, fires, water filters, navigation, knots and bridge building, with first aid, stretchers, morse and distress signals on the safety side. Around it come carving with knife and wood, making things from natural materials, geocaching and stargazing. Adventure-education games are built in deliberately, because the obstacles the group keeps running into are exactly what those games are there to work on.

Facilities

The centre stands on eight hectares with a great deal of woodland and room enough for children to roam and play. The ground borders the Braunsteich lake directly, and the forest continues beyond the site, much of it under nature protection. Children are housed in bungalows, meals come from the centre's own kitchen, and the grounds include a swimming pool and open pitches.

Camp Experience

This is a camp for a child who would rather make something work than be entertained. A shelter either keeps the rain off or it does not; a fire either lights or it does not; and a group that cannot agree does not get its bridge built. That is the point of running it as adventure education: willingness to compromise, trust and the ability to handle a disagreement are not lectured about here but needed, repeatedly, by children who are learning them from each other in a forest.

An introduction to survival craft for children, taught through doing. Techniques covered include building a shelter, lighting a fire, making a water filter, finding the way in open country with map and compass, tying knots and building a bridge. A safety strand covers outdoor first aid, building a stretcher, how to behave in an emergency, morse and distress signals. A third strand is adventure education: handling a carving knife and wood, making things from natural materials, geocaching and stargazing. The programme is run with adventure-education materials and equipment supplied by the operator, and the games built into it are chosen to develop willingness to compromise, trust and the ability to handle conflict.

Each technique is first explained in a child-friendly way and then put straight into practice, with the group outdoors all day. Topics through the week include building a shelter, lighting a fire, filtering water from the lake, orientation with map and compass, knots and bridge building, outdoor first aid and emergency signals, and carving and crafting with natural materials. A night outdoors is offered on a voluntary basis.

More about this camp

This wilderness camp in Saxony is run by the Berlin operator ReiseMeise at a children's holiday centre near Weisswasser, for children aged six to thirteen in groups of eight to fourteen. The week is organised in three strands. Techniques: building a shelter, lighting a fire, making a water filter, navigating open country with map and compass, tying knots and building a bridge. Safety: first aid outdoors, building a stretcher, how to behave in an emergency, morse and distress signals. Adventure education: handling a carving knife and wood, making objects from natural materials, geocaching and stargazing. Games are deliberately built into the programme, because a group that cannot agree does not finish its bridge, and willingness to compromise, trust and handling conflict are skills the camp sets out to develop rather than merely discuss. The centre sits on eight hectares of largely wooded ground bordering the Braunsteich lake, with forest continuing beyond the site, much of it under nature protection. Children sleep in bungalows in rooms of four to six beds with bed linen provided, girls and boys separately, and every bungalow has its own counsellor's room so staff are nearby at night. Full board covers a breakfast and dinner buffet and a hot lunch, with drinks round the clock and packed food on day trips. Equipment and adventure-education materials are supplied, the activities are professionally led, and participants are supervised by day and by night. Stays are sold by the week, with a two-week option on most start dates, and accompanied coach transfers from Berlin and Dresden can be booked in addition.
