Français... en piste is a French language ski camp run by the Ghent youth organisation Roeland vzw in La Toussuire, in the Les Sybelles ski area of the French Alps. Teenagers spend the New Year holidays in the mountains: they ski every day in small groups with Roeland monitors, take three hours of ski or snowboard lessons a day in French from qualified ESF instructors in the first days, and spend the evenings on games and activities that also run entirely in French. Speaking French is the rule of the house, so the language is picked up through the day rather than in a classroom. The group stays at Hotel Edelweiss in the village of Fontcouverte-la-Toussuire, close to the slopes, in rooms for two to eight people, on full board.

About

About the Course

French is the working language of the whole camp, not a subject taught in a classroom. Monitors speak French in the ski groups, at the table and during the evening programme, and participants are asked to do the same — that rule is what makes the week an immersion. On the first days of the stay, qualified instructors from the French national ski school (ESF) give three hours of ski or snowboard instruction a day, also in French, so the language is learned alongside the technique.

What’s Included

The camp price covers ski or snowboard lessons in French with ESF instructors on the first days, ski sessions and snow activities supervised by Roeland monitors, evening activities in French, ski equipment (skis, poles and boots) and a helmet, a six-day lift pass for the whole Les Sybelles ski area, and full board. Coach travel from Ghent is not included and is booked separately. Snowboarders pay a supplement for their equipment. Because of limited luggage space, only personal helmets may be brought; other personal ski equipment stays at home.

Accommodation

The group stays at Hotel Edelweiss in the village of Fontcouverte-la-Toussuire, a short distance from the La Toussuire slopes. Rooms sleep between two and eight people. The hotel has a bar and two play rooms where participants can relax together after a day on the piste.

Meal Plan

Full board is included: breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and an evening meal.

Activities & Excursions

Skiing or snowboarding every day in small groups, with Roeland monitors alongside the participants on the slopes and during snow activities. Evenings are given over to games and relaxed group activities, run in French like the rest of the day.

Facilities

The accommodation has a bar and two play rooms for the group. The camp uses the Les Sybelles ski area, reached from the village of Fontcouverte-la-Toussuire.

Camp Experience

A week in the French Alps over the New Year holidays for teenagers who want to ski and to come home speaking better French. The group is Belgian and international, the days are spent outdoors, and French is used from breakfast to the evening programme. Roeland vzw has organised language holidays since 1971 and works with trained monitors who take part in the whole day, on the slopes and off them.

Roeland vzw

Roeland vzw is a Belgian non-profit youth organisation based in Ghent, founded in 1971, whose motto is "Creatief talen leren" — learning languages creatively. It runs language holidays for children and young people aged 7 to 19 in French, English and Dutch, both in Belgium and abroad, from one week up to thirteen days, as residential and day camps, with full-immersion and gentler entry-level formats. In Ghent it also organises Dutch day camps for newly arrived children and for children with a language delay, and during the school year it offers city visits for schools in Dutch and French. Camps are led by trained volunteer monitors, and the target language is used throughout the day, in workshops, games, sport and evening activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The camp price does not include travel. Roeland offers a return coach from Oostakker in Ghent as a separate option; the coach leaves on the evening of the first day of the stay and returns in the morning of the last day.

Skis, poles, boots and a helmet are included in the camp price. Snowboarders pay a supplement for their board equipment. Because luggage space on the coach is limited, participants may bring their own helmet but not their own skis or board.

No previous level is required for this camp format, but French is the working language of the whole stay: the monitors speak French on the slopes, at the table and during the evening programme, and participants are asked to do the same.

A six-day lift pass for the whole Les Sybelles ski area, full board, supervised ski sessions and snow activities with Roeland monitors, and evening activities in French.

The organiser runs this camp only if at least 35 participants register.
