About

About the Course

Children have three hours of English every day in small groups. The operator teaches through games, role play, listening work and creative tasks rather than textbook drill, and varies the method by age, so that a child who has lost confidence in class can speak without an audience of thirty. Leisure activities are led largely in English as well, which is where most of the speaking practice happens. Every participant receives a certificate for the course and all working materials are provided.

What’s Included

The price covers the full stay: accommodation on full board, the daily English lessons with materials and certificate, the windsurfing course with equipment, free use of the surf kayaks and stand-up paddleboards when available, and round-the-clock supervision by the travel team. The operator states that its price includes every listed service and every activity actually carried out. A supervised train or bus transfer from Hamburg or Berlin is offered at an extra charge, but the operator publishes the amount only inside its booking form.

Accommodation

The camp is based at the Sporthostel Schubybeach on the Schubystrand, a short walk from the sea and from the surf school. Children sleep in multi-bed rooms built for groups, usually four and at most six to a room, with the leaders housed immediately next door. Bed linen and towels are not provided and should be brought along. The grounds hold indoor and outdoor space for free time and a barbecue area where the group gathers round a fire one evening.

Meal Plan

Full board with three meals a day and drinks available between them. One meal, usually the evening one, is served hot; breakfast and lunch are a self-service buffet that the children help to set out. The operator asks that each child bring a water bottle.

Activities & Excursions

Windsurfing is taught over twelve to fifteen hours including theory by instructors from the Nordwind Wassersport club: the first week covers the beach start, tacking, holding height and gybing, the second adds the harness and footstraps, upwind sailing, the water start and faster turns. Away from the board there is beach football and volleyball, speedminton and tamburello on the sand, stand-up paddleboards and surf kayaks, basketball, table tennis, table football and darts, swimming in the Baltic, group games and a trip to the Entdeckerbad pool in Damp.

Facilities

The sport hostel sits directly behind the dunes at Schubystrand near Damp in Schleswig-Holstein, with the surf school and the beach the nearest neighbours and the seaside town of Damp a short walk away. Indoor and outdoor leisure areas, a barbecue and fire pit, and the club watersport equipment are all on site.

Camp Experience

Arrival is in the late afternoon and departure in the morning, so the days in between belong entirely to the camp. The operator keeps groups small, between four and fifteen children, which is the point of the format: a child who is behind in English at school practises here without a class watching, and spends the rest of the day on the water. The operator notes that this trip is generally not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

More about this camp

This camp is run by a German operator at the Sporthostel Schubybeach on the Schubystrand, a few minutes on foot from the Baltic and from the surf school. Children aged eight to thirteen stay in multi-bed rooms on full board and spend three hours of each day on English, taught in small groups of four to fifteen through games, role play, listening work and presentation tasks, with the method varied by age. The rest of the day belongs to the water: twelve to fifteen hours of windsurfing instruction with theory from the Nordwind Wassersport club, covering the beach start, tacking, holding height and gybing, and in the longer stay the harness and footstraps, upwind sailing and the water start. Surf kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are free to use when available. Leisure time is led largely in English, which is where most of the speaking happens, and runs to beach football and volleyball, basketball, table tennis, games on the grounds, swimming in the sea and an evening round the fire. The stay can be booked for one week or two, and the team supervises round the clock.
