Summer English for teenagers in Chester

Summer English for Teenagers is ELC's summer course for 13 to 16 year-olds, taught at the Queen's School next to the ELC Chester centre and close to the city centre. Students have 20 lessons (15 hours) a week, normally in the morning, in classes of no more than 14. The lessons focus on actively improving communication in spoken English, and the course accepts levels from A1 to C1+. All course books and materials are included, and every student receives an end of course certificate showing hours of study and final level.

The course fee covers tuition, all course books and materials, the afternoon and evening activity programme, weekly excursions and the end of course certificate. A registration fee is added to every booking. Homestay accommodation with a host family is arranged by the school and charged per week; unaccompanied students under 18 must take homestay, with full board for students under 16.

Students live with host families selected and visited by ELC. Rooms are single or shared, and the homestay includes breakfast, dinner and a packed lunch on school days. Host families are within reach of the school by a short bus journey or walk. Students are expected home for dinner by 6pm from Monday to Friday, and the curfew for summer course students is 8pm every day.

Breakfast and dinner are taken with the host family, and a packed lunch is provided for the school day. Special diets can be catered for and should be mentioned when booking.

Every week includes two discover Chester or discover UK activities, two half-day activities, one half-day excursion, two evening events and, on mid-course weekends, one full-day excursion. The programme is run by ELC staff and is designed to put the language of the classroom to use straight away.

ELC Chester occupies three elegant buildings in Stanley Place, a small historic square in the old walled city. The centre has 21 classrooms, free internet and wifi throughout, a self-access learning centre, a computer room, a student common room and a patio garden. Lessons for the teenage summer course are held at the Queen's School, immediately next to the centre.

Chester is a compact walled city in the north west of England, with Roman and medieval streets, the Eastgate clock and the Shropshire Union Canal running through it. ELC has taught English here since the centre opened, and it is the only year round English language school in the city, so the summer group joins a school with a settled routine and a wide mix of nationalities. Students get a British city small enough to learn to navigate on their own, with the North Wales coast and the countryside within easy reach for excursions.
