Summer English for teenagers 16-18 in Brighton

Twenty lessons a week, fifteen hours in total, in classes of no more than fourteen students. A lesson lasts forty-five minutes and lessons are usually combined into longer blocks: the morning runs from 09:00 to 10:30 and from 11:00 to 12:30. The course is general English, and students are placed by level from elementary through to advanced. Teaching is at Loxdale, a summer centre about five kilometres from the main ELC school in Palmeira Square, Brighton.

The course fee covers tuition and the school's registration fee. Accommodation with a host family, the activity and social programme and hot lunches at the centre are booked separately with the school, each charged by the week. The minimum stay is two weeks.

All students on the summer course stay in homestay accommodation with a local host family and travel in to the centre each day. Unaccompanied students under eighteen are required to take a single room with at least half board.

Host families provide meals as part of the homestay arrangement. Hot lunches at the centre are available on weekdays and must be booked together with the rest of the package; the school caters for a range of diets, including gluten-free and lactose-free, for a weekly supplement.

Afternoon and evening activities run from Monday to Friday, with a full-day guided excursion at the weekend for each week booked. The programme includes a walking tour of Brighton, volleyball, the Sea Life Centre, laser tag, bowling, a trip along the coast to the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, and an under-eighteens party. Evening activities run from 19:00 to 22:00.

Loxdale is a mansion house set in its own gardens, with a sports hall and a canteen on site. Classrooms are in the main building. The main ELC school at Palmeira Square, about five kilometres away, is the school's year-round centre.

Brighton is a seaside city on the south coast of England, an hour from London by train, known for its beach, its pier and the small independent shops of the North Laine. Students on the course are teenagers from many countries, and the mix of morning lessons, afternoon activities and weekend excursions is designed so that English is used outside the classroom as well as in it.
