English Action Camp in Radstadt, Salzburg Region, Austria

English is the working language of the whole camp, not just of the classroom. Twenty forty-five-minute learning units per week are delivered by native-speaking trainers from the UK, the USA, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, in groups capped at fifteen participants. Lessons follow the Common European Framework and are structured around conversation, vocabulary, grammar, and country and culture, taught through role play, discussion, games and movement rather than textbook drills. Project work runs alongside: campers film short movies, stage plays, conduct interviews and present to the group. Placement happens on the first evening through relaxed group games instead of a written test, so ability groups are balanced without putting anyone on the spot. Complete beginners are accepted. Every camper keeps a personal learning folder and receives a certificate of completion at the end of the stay.

The camp is booked as an all-inclusive residential package covering tuition, accommodation, full board, the activity and evening programme, and the weekly excursion highlight. Stays are available as one week or two consecutive weeks; arrival is on Sunday afternoon and departure on Saturday morning, giving six or thirteen overnights. Teaching materials and the personal learning folder are included. Travel to and from the camp is arranged separately: parents may bring the child directly, or book a supervised camp coach, an accompanied train or coach journey from several Austrian and German departure points, or a supervised airport transfer. Collection from the platform at Salzburg main station is provided without an additional charge when the group transfer is booked.

Campers stay at the provider's own ya! guesthouse Simonyhof, set in a quiet spot with no through traffic in the Salzburger Sportwelt region and surrounded by open ground. Rooms sleep four to six and each has its own shower and WC. Bedrooms are supervised by a designated room carer who acts as the child's first point of contact. The house has four dining and recreation rooms, a games room, a multimedia room, a small kiosk and an internet corner with free wifi, so there is somewhere sheltered to spend time when the weather turns.

Full board is included throughout the stay: a breakfast buffet, a lunch menu and a dinner menu, with a fresh salad buffet served at both lunch and dinner. The guesthouse runs its own farm, so much of the produce on the table is grown on site. Fruit and drinks are freely available through the day under the house's Vit's4Fun arrangement. Barbecues and campfire evenings are held regularly as part of the programme.

The activity programme runs in English alongside the lessons and is led by the same native-speaking team. Each week has two headline outings that alternate week by week: a high ropes course paired with an adventure hike and mountain picnic, or a rafting tour combined with a day in the mountains. Beyond that there are sports tournaments, team-building games, a house rally, forest games and creative workshops, plus a trip to the local outdoor pool when the weather allows. Evenings are programmed too, with talent shows, a disco, karaoke contests, movie nights, torchlight hikes and campfires. Sports and craft materials are supplied by the camp.

Sport is played mostly on site. The grounds include an all-purpose sports hall, a fun court marked for basketball, volleyball and football, a separate beach volleyball court, a football pitch, outdoor trampolines and a large yard with a campfire area. Indoors there is a gym, a multimedia room, a disco with karaoke, a games room with table football, table tennis, badminton and air hockey, and an internet corner with free wifi. The municipal outdoor pool in Radstadt, which has a forty-metre slide, is about twenty minutes away on foot, and a swimming lake is within cycling distance.

The camp is aimed at children and teenagers aged eight to sixteen and draws an international group, so English is genuinely the shared language rather than a classroom exercise. Supervision is continuous, with one counsellor for every eight participants, a designated room carer for each bedroom and a parent hotline staffed around the clock while camp is running. Counsellors go through a multi-stage selection process and a multi-day training programme before the season, and the provider works to a certified child protection concept with dedicated staff training on the subject. For many campers this is a first stay away from home, and the daily rhythm is built around that.
