About

About the Course

General English for students aged 11 to 18 on the UWS Paisley campus, taught by St Andrew's College Language Schools. Levels are set by an online grammar and listening test before arrival and a speaking and writing test at the centre; the school accepts A1+ and A2 through B1 and B2 to C1 and C1+. Groups hold up to eighteen students, lessons last an hour and a half each, and the week carries fifteen hours of teaching arranged on a zig-zag timetable — mornings on some days, afternoons on others — so that lessons and the activity programme share the day.

What’s Included

The stay is sold as a fourteen-night residential programme with a seven-night option, and the school also publishes a Classic, Gold and Platinum structure in which the upgrades add paid entries and extra outings on top of the Classic programme. Classic includes paid entry to Edinburgh Castle and a Loch Lomond cruise. A damage deposit is collected on arrival and returned on departure, and a fee applies to a lost key; both are set out in the school's own documents. Airport transfers are priced separately in the school's transfer price list.

Accommodation

Students live on the campus itself, in modern flats shared by four to six people, each with a single en-suite bedroom; the centre has two hundred and seventy single beds with en-suite bathrooms. Flats have communal kitchens and common areas with a fridge and freezer; the kitchens are fully fitted, but cookers are switched off and are only turned on at a group leader's request, and there are no toasters. Linen is provided and changed every six to eight days, and towels are not provided. Cleaning is done before arrival and then every six to eight days. Laundry facilities are on site and operated through an app. The accommodation block has a refurbished ground-floor common area with televisions, a pool table and a table-tennis table. Twenty-four-hour security and CCTV are in operation.

Meal Plan

Meals are served in the campus canteen, and there is also a café on site. The school provides cash for lunch on excursion days rather than packed lunches. Vending machines are available while the college is open.

Activities & Excursions

Full-day excursions run three times a week and visit Edinburgh city centre and its west end, Glasgow city centre and its west end, Glasgow's museums and Silverburn, Stirling town centre and a cruise on Loch Lomond; a half-day excursion goes into Paisley town centre. Journeys outside Paisley on the student programme are made by private coach. Evenings are given to the activity programme, and the centre has its own disco venue. The common area in the accommodation block is used for pool and table tennis, and there is an outdoor gym space with outdoor seating areas on the campus.

Facilities

A compact campus in the centre of Paisley with modern teaching rooms, a library, a lecture theatre, a canteen and a café. There is a common room; study and computer rooms are available on request. The accommodation block adds a refurbished common area with televisions, a pool table and a table-tennis table, and the campus has an outdoor gym space and several outdoor seating areas. Wi-Fi covers the site, reception is staffed around the clock, a safe box is kept in the office, and first-aid-trained staff are on site. Indoor sports facilities and a swimming pool are not available at this centre, and outdoor sports facilities are limited.

Camp Experience

Paisley is Scotland's largest town by population and sits on the edge of Glasgow, seven miles from the city. The campus stands two minutes from the High Street and eight minutes' walk from the town centre, with a station nearby that reaches Glasgow Central in about ten minutes. The town is known for Paisley Abbey, founded in the twelfth century, and for the weaving trade that gave the paisley pattern its name; museums, parks and an active arts scene are within walking distance. Staff live on the campus around the clock — a centre manager, an activity manager, an excursion manager and a welfare coordinator — and wear a purple uniform shirt and a name lanyard, as do the students.

General English for students aged 11 to 18, taught on the UWS Paisley campus by St Andrew's College Language Schools. Classes hold up to eighteen students and are grouped by level after an online grammar and listening test taken before arrival and a speaking and writing test on the first days at the centre. The school teaches fifteen hours a week over a fourteen-night stay and runs lessons on a zig-zag timetable, so a group studies in the morning on some days and in the afternoon on others, with the rest of the day given to the activity and excursion programme.

Fifteen hours of lessons a week; each lesson lasts one hour and thirty minutes. Classes are capped at a ratio of one teacher to eighteen students. Teachers hold a teaching certificate; all staff sign a declaration form, obtain a Disclosure check and provide two references. Lessons alternate between morning and afternoon slots across the week (the school calls this a zig-zag timetable).

General English across speaking, listening, reading and writing, with the level set by an entry test rather than chosen in advance. Entry levels run from A1+ and A2 through B1 and B2 to C1 and C1+. Learning continues outside the classroom through the activity programme and the excursions, which visit Edinburgh and Glasgow city centres and the west ends of both cities, Glasgow's museums and Silverburn, Stirling town centre and a Loch Lomond cruise.

More about this camp

St Andrew's College Language Schools runs its summer English course on the Paisley campus of the University of the West of Scotland, in the middle of Scotland's largest town and a short train ride from Glasgow. The campus is compact and everything sits together: teaching rooms, a library, a lecture theatre, a canteen, a café and the accommodation block, so students move between class, meals and their rooms without leaving the site. Teaching is General English for ages 11 to 18. Groups hold up to eighteen students, each lesson runs an hour and a half, and the week carries fifteen hours of class. Levels are decided by an online grammar and listening test taken before arrival and a speaking and writing test in the first days at the centre, so students arrive without having to declare a level; the school accepts A1+ and A2 through B1 and B2 up to C1 and C1+. Lessons follow what the school calls a zig-zag timetable: a group studies in the morning on some days and in the afternoon on others, and the other half of the day belongs to the activity and excursion programme. Students live in modern flats shared by four to six people, each with a single en-suite bedroom; the centre has two hundred and seventy such beds. Flats have fully fitted communal kitchens with a fridge and freezer, though cookers stay switched off unless a group leader asks for them, and linen is provided and changed every six to eight days. Towels are not provided. Laundry facilities on site are operated through an app, and the accommodation block has a refurbished common area on the ground floor with televisions, a pool table and a table-tennis table. Twenty-four-hour security and CCTV are in operation, and a centre manager, activity manager, excursion manager and welfare coordinator are on site around the clock. Full-day excursions run three times a week — Edinburgh city centre and its west end, Glasgow city centre and its west end, Glasgow's museums and Silverburn, Stirling town centre and a cruise on Loch Lomond — and a half-day excursion visits Paisley town centre. Travel outside Paisley on the student programme is by private coach. Classic programme entries include Edinburgh Castle and the Loch Lomond cruise, and the school's Gold and Platinum upgrades add further paid entries and outings. Paisley itself rewards the walk: Paisley Abbey was founded in the twelfth century and still shows nineteenth- and twentieth-century work, the town gave its name to the paisley pattern during its years as a global weaving centre, and museums, parks and an arts scene sit within a few minutes of the campus. The High Street is two minutes away, the town centre eight minutes on foot, and the station reaches Glasgow Central in about ten minutes.
