About

About the Course

General English for ages 12 to 18: fifteen hours a week, in lessons of 1 hour 40 minutes with breaks scheduled between them. Six levels are taught on the CEFR scale, from A1+ to C1+, and the class to student ratio is one to eighteen. The entry test comes in two parts - listening and grammar are done before arrival, speaking and writing on site. Teachers hold a teaching certificate, and every member of staff signs a declaration form and is checked with a disclosure and two references.

What’s Included

The Classic Programme is quoted per stay - one price for a fourteen-night stay and one for a seven-night stay; the amounts are in the price list on this page. The price covers tuition, campus accommodation, full board, the activity programme and the excursion programme, with entry to Hampton Court Palace and Kew Gardens included. The centre runs two terms, each of two weeks, both starting on a Thursday. Gold and Platinum upgrades are offered on top of the Classic Programme and are listed separately in the extras. A refundable damage deposit is taken for the stay and returned at the end of it; airport transfers are priced separately and are not part of the package.

Accommodation

Students live on campus at Whitelands College, in single en-suite bedrooms, with up to ten students sharing a flat and its kitchen as a communal social space. The kitchen has no appliances or utensils provided, and towels are not provided in any of the rooms, so students bring their own; linen is changed before arrival and weekly after that, and rooms are cleaned on the same schedule. Accommodation and teaching spaces stand in adjacent buildings, so the walk between living and learning is short. The campus is closed, with a twenty-four-hour security presence, secure access entry points and a twenty-four-hour reception.

Meal Plan

Full board on campus: breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. On each full-day excursion, and on Sundays and optional days, students are given a packed lunch instead of lunch on site.

Activities & Excursions

Evening activities run every day, and the campus has large green spaces for outdoor sports. Over a fortnight the programme includes two full-day and six half-day excursions, with entry to Hampton Court Palace and Kew Gardens covered by the Classic Programme. Half-day trips run into London, which is thirty-five minutes away by bus and train, and the published two-week programme fills afternoons with sports tournaments and conversation clubs and evenings with culture nights, a talent show and discos on campus. Richmond Park is immediately behind the campus, and Kew Gardens and Hampton Court Palace are both close by.

Facilities

The centre sits on the fifty-four-acre parkland campus of the University of Roehampton in southwest London, centred on Parkstead House, a neoclassical villa of the 1760s, and backing on to Richmond Park. Whitelands College, where the programme runs, was established in 1841 as a teacher-training college and keeps a compact, close-knit campus where living and teaching buildings stand next to each other. On campus: classrooms, the residence, large green spaces for outdoor sports, dining, laundry, vending machines, free wifi, a twenty-four-hour reception and a safe box in the office. A study room is available on request; there is no indoor sports hall, no swimming pool access, no games console room and no common room inside the accommodation.

Camp Experience

A compact, self-contained campus in Zone 3 of London, with central London thirty-five minutes away by bus and train and Kew Gardens, Hampton Court Palace and Richmond Park on the doorstep. The nearest town is Putney, in west London on the Thames, known for its mix of shops, cafes, restaurants and riverside spaces; the station is a fifteen-minute bus journey from campus. Eighty students at a time, all in single en-suite rooms, with centre managers, excursion and activity managers and welfare coordinators on site around the clock.
