About

About the Course

General English for students aged 11 to 18 in the traditional rooms and modern teaching spaces of Newbattle Abbey College. The school prints 15 hours of lessons a week for 14-night stays, each lesson lasting 1 hour 40 minutes, with a class-to-student ratio of 1:18. Grammar and listening are tested by an online level test before arrival and speaking and writing on arrival; levels from A1+ to C1+ are accepted.

What’s Included

The school publishes three programme tiers at this centre. Classic is the base programme and includes paid entries to Edinburgh Castle and the Loch Katrine cruise; the Gold and Platinum upgrades are charged as supplements on top of it. A damage deposit is collected on arrival and returned on departure, and airport transfers are priced separately in the school's own price list.

Accommodation

Students live in the accommodation blocks on the campus itself. The school prints a mixture of room types: 45 single en-suite beds with a private shower room, 8 beds in twin en-suite rooms, 6 beds in triple rooms, 4 beds in a quadruple en-suite room and 27 beds in rooms with shared facilities — 90 places in all, with up to four students in an apartment or room. The rooms are furnished to a high standard and have student Wi-Fi. Linen is changed once per 14-night stay and towels are not provided. There is no kitchen in the accommodation. The college has CCTV and secure access entry systems, and St Andrew's College staff are contactable around the clock.

Meal Plan

Meals are served in the college dining hall. The school provides one packed lunch for each full-day excursion.

Activities & Excursions

The school prints one full-day and three half-day excursions a week, with all journeys on the excursion programme by private coach. Named destinations include Stirling with a Loch Katrine cruise, Glasgow and Alnwick Castle; the Classic programme includes paid entry to Edinburgh Castle and the Loch Katrine cruise. The 125 acres of parkland around the college include an outdoor activity space, and there are social spaces indoors for the evening programme.

Facilities

The college is an A-listed building — originally a medieval Cistercian monastery with a 900-year history — on the river Esk in 125 acres of parkland. It combines traditional rooms, among them a drawing room and panelled social spaces, with modern learning facilities, a dining hall and on-site accommodation. Wi-Fi is available across the site and laundry is free, though detergent is not supplied.

Camp Experience

Edinburgh has been called the most beautiful of Europe's capitals, and the college sits on its outskirts: a thirty-minute drive, or a thirty-minute bus ride, from the city centre, with local amenities in the neighbouring village. Students get a historic residence in open parkland on one side and a capital city of festivals, museums and galleries on the other.
