About

About the Course

General English for teenagers, 15 hours a week in lessons of one hour and forty minutes, with a class-to-student ratio of 1:18. The centre runs as a half-day programme: lessons are scheduled either in the morning or in the afternoon, alternating with the excursion half of the day. Grammar and listening are tested by an online level test before arrival; speaking and writing are tested on arrival. The school accepts levels from A1+ to C1+. Teachers hold a teaching certificate.

What’s Included

The base package is the Classic programme: lessons, accommodation at Bainfield Hall, meals, the activity programme and the excursion programme by private coach, with paid entry to Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse included. Gold and Platinum upgrades are supplements on top of Classic and are listed as paid extras: Gold adds a full-day trip to Alnwick Castle, Platinum adds entry to Dynamic Earth and an activity night at Fountain Park with a choice of bowling, mini-golf or laser tag. A damage deposit of GBP 100 or EUR 120 is collected on arrival and returned on departure.

Accommodation

Students stay at Bainfield Hall, a modern university hall about two kilometres from the Merchiston teaching facilities and canteen — roughly a twenty-minute walk, with a private coach each morning and once in the evening after dinner. After evening activities, staff and students walk back together. Rooms are single en-suite with a private shower room, in small flats of up to eight students; each flat has a small kitchen and a sitting area with a flat-screen TV. The cooker is switched off and the kitchen has a fridge and freezer but no kettle or toaster. Linen is changed every six to eight days; towels are not provided. Rooms are cleaned before arrival, again within six to nine days of arrival and weekly after that. Bainfield Hall has a 24-hour security presence, CCTV and secure access entry systems.

Meal Plan

Meals are served in the Merchiston campus canteen. Packed lunches are provided on weekdays and meal vouchers at weekends. The espresso bar on campus is reserved for group leaders on weekdays.

Activities & Excursions

The centre runs on a half-day pattern, so students spend half of each day on excursions. The school prints two full-day and nine half-day excursions for a 14-night stay, all travel by private coach; named full-day destinations are Glasgow, St Andrews and Dundee. English lessons, meals and most evening activities are held at the Merchiston campus, and sport takes place in Harrison Park, a short walk away. The disco is held at the Bainfield Bar or the Glassroom.

Facilities

A city-centre campus with modern, spacious classrooms, a canteen, a coffee shop, laundry services, vending machines at both the campus and the hall, and Wi-Fi on campus and at the accommodation. A study room and a computer room are available on request, and there is a safe box in the office. Each flat at the hall has its own common room. The school prints no indoor sports facilities and no swimming pool at this centre: sport uses a nearby park. Convenience stores are close by.

Camp Experience

The campus sits on Colinton Road in the heart of Edinburgh, about two miles from the city centre — roughly thirty minutes on foot from the campus, ten minutes by private coach or fifteen to twenty by public bus. Independent cafes and restaurants are a few minutes' walk from the main building. Edinburgh's city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and the National Museum of Scotland among its attractions.
