The Pre-University Honours Programmes are two-week academic summer courses run on the campus of the University of Amsterdam for high school students aged 16 and over. Each programme takes one subject - business innovation and entrepreneurship, international relations, media and journalism, politics and identity, psychology or sustainable thinking - and teaches it at university level, in English, by UvA academic staff. Classes are held on campus; participants live together in shared, university-arranged accommodation in Amsterdam with breakfast and dinner on class days, and the academic fee covers course readings and materials, lunch on class days and excursions. The programmes carry no study credit and are designed to show school students what studying a subject at a research university is actually like.

About

About the Course

Each programme is one subject taught at university level over two weeks on the campus of the University of Amsterdam. Teaching is in English and led by UvA academic staff, in a mix of lectures, seminars, discussions and workshops, with group work and, on several programmes, a presentation of the student's own work at the end. Students choose one subject when they apply: business innovation and entrepreneurship, international relations, media and journalism, politics and identity, psychology, or sustainable thinking. The programmes carry no study credit; alongside the subject itself students practise the academic study skills and learning methods they will need at university.

What’s Included

The academic fee covers the teaching, course readings and materials, lunch on class days and the programme excursions. Housing is arranged by the university and is compulsory for students on the pre-university programmes; its fee covers the room plus breakfast and dinner on class days. The price shown here is the academic fee and the compulsory housing fee together, for the whole stay. Flights and travel to Amsterdam, insurance and personal spending are not included, and the application itself carries a separate one-off fee, listed under extras.

Accommodation

Students live together in accommodation arranged by the university's Summer Programmes Office: a hostel in Amsterdam Oost. Rooms are shared, with up to six students of the same gender in a room and shared bathrooms and common areas. Breakfast and dinner are served on class days. Rooms and locations are allocated by the office and cannot be chosen; check-in times are given in the acceptance letter, and check-out is by 09:00 on the morning of departure. Staying in this accommodation is compulsory for pre-university programme students.

Meal Plan

Breakfast and dinner come with the accommodation on class days, and lunch on class days is covered by the academic fee. Meals on non-class days and anything bought outside the programme are paid for by the student.

Activities & Excursions

Every programme includes excursions tied to its subject, covered by the academic fee, and a social programme that brings the group together outside class hours. Students work in groups, take part in workshops and, on several of the programmes, present original work of their own at the end of the two weeks.

Facilities

Classes are held on the university's own campus in Amsterdam, in the lecture and seminar rooms used by UvA students. The accommodation is a hostel in Amsterdam Oost with shared bathrooms and common areas.

Camp Experience

Two weeks in Amsterdam with a group of school students from across the world: classes on a university campus in the morning and afternoon, group work and workshops, excursions tied to the subject, and evenings and non-class days in shared accommodation with the rest of the group. Students arrive the day before teaching starts and leave the morning after it ends, and the Summer Programmes Office looks after the practical side of the stay.

More about this camp

The University of Amsterdam runs its Pre-University Honours Programmes for school students who want to find out what studying a subject at a research university actually feels like. Each programme lasts two weeks, takes place on the university campus in Amsterdam and covers a single subject at university level: business innovation and entrepreneurship, international relations, media and journalism, politics and identity, psychology or sustainable thinking. Teaching is in English and led by UvA academic staff. Classes mix lectures, seminars, discussions and workshops with group work, and on several of the programmes students present original work of their own at the end. Alongside the subject, participants practise the academic study skills and learning methods they will need once they start a degree. The programmes carry no study credit. Students live together in accommodation arranged by the university Summer Programmes Office, in a hostel in Amsterdam Oost, sharing rooms with up to five other students of the same gender. Breakfast and dinner are served on class days, lunch on class days is covered by the academic fee, and the fee also covers course readings, materials and the programme excursions. Staying in this accommodation is compulsory for pre-university students, so the price quoted here covers both the teaching and the stay.
