About

About the Course

Students step into the working day of a media professional through immersive career simulations. They develop storytelling skills in a series of creative writing challenges, write and produce their own podcast, analyse current trends and performance metrics to build a digital strategy for a client, learn how to build a successful personal online brand, and take expert-led digital content workshops to sharpen design and editing skills. A visit to a news studio to deliver a simulated broadcast and a social media content strategy for a public figure are published as part of the programme. The simulations are coached by media professionals specialising in content creation, brand strategy, public relations and journalism, who also run private networking sessions with the group.

What’s Included

The school offers a special discount - ask us for details. Three options are published: a first-week taster, the full two-week experience, and a two-week premium enhanced package, each available residential or non-residential. Contact time with professionals is published as 25 hours for one week, 50 hours for two weeks and 65 hours for the enhanced package. Every option includes hands-on career simulations, programme materials, equipment and resources, a digital certificate, on-site safeguarding and pastoral care, and time on the UCL campus. Excursions to professional workplaces are published as up to two on the one-week option and up to five on both two-week options. The two-week options add an assessment centre with feedback, a graduation ceremony with a physical certificate, and the Level 3 Award in Work Experience and Career Planning, equating to eight UCAS points. The enhanced package adds time on the LSE campus, personalised professional development and university admissions coaching, personality and situational judgement testing, and a private gala dinner and networking event with professionals.

Accommodation

Residential students live on the university campus in central London, in private single en-suite rooms at University of London halls of residence used by UCL and LSE students. The school names Garden Halls, College Hall, International Hall and Frances Gardner House among the halls it typically occupies. The one-week residential option is published as six nights and both two-week options as thirteen nights; check-in is the day before the programme starts and check-out the day after it ends. Non-residential students attend as day students and arrange their own stay.

Meal Plan

Breakfast and dinner at the accommodation canteen are included for students who choose the residential package. The school does not publish meals for non-residential students.

Activities & Excursions

Students on the residential package have an evening and weekend social activity programme run by the school. Excursions to professional workplaces and venues across London, including a news studio, are part of the programme itself rather than an add-on, and certain days take place at industry locations away from the campus.

Facilities

The programme is based at UCL and the surrounding University of London campus in central London. The enhanced package also includes time on the LSE campus. Accommodation for residential students is in university halls of residence, all rooms single and en-suite.

Camp Experience

Residential students are supported around the clock by a designated pastoral and activity leader, house parents, centre managers and a medical office. The school states that students have joined its programmes from more than one hundred countries and that around half of its students come from the United Kingdom and the United States. The published minimum English language requirement is CEFR B2, upper-intermediate. Students receive personalised feedback on their work from working media professionals, plus tailored advice on subject choices, university selection, work experience and extra-curricular activities.

A digital media career-immersion programme in London for students aged 15 to 18, based on the UCL and University of London campus. Students step into the working day of a media professional through simulations coached by specialists in content creation, brand strategy, public relations and journalism, and no prior knowledge is required. This package is available for one or two weeks, with the residential option: a private en-suite room in a university hall of residence, breakfast and dinner, evening and weekend activities and round-the-clock pastoral support.

About 25 hours a week of contact time with professionals, Monday to Friday, with the weekend free of programme hours. The programme is built from career simulations rather than lectures: creative writing challenges, writing and producing a podcast, building a digital strategy for a client from trends and performance metrics, turning around a struggling media company, a visit to a broadcasting studio, and responding to a PR crisis under time pressure.

Students learn how media, PR and digital strategy work in practice, build content and storytelling skills and meet professionals in the industry. Assessed work leads to a Level 3 Award in Work Experience and Career Planning, worth 8 UCAS points.

More about this camp

The Digital Media Summer Experience is a work experience programme rather than a taught course: students spend the programme doing the job rather than reading about it. The simulations cover creative storytelling challenges, writing and producing a podcast, analysing trends and performance metrics to build a viral digital strategy for a client, building a personal online brand, and expert-led workshops in digital design and editing. Students also visit a news studio to deliver a simulated broadcast and produce a social media content strategy for a public figure. Each simulation is coached by a professional working in content creation, brand strategy, public relations or journalism, and the group attends private networking sessions with them. The programme runs on the UCL and University of London campus in central London, with certain days at other industry locations. Students choose a first-week taster, the full two-week experience or a two-week premium enhanced package, and each of those can be taken residential or non-residential. Residential students stay in private single en-suite rooms in University of London halls, with breakfast and dinner, an evening and weekend activity programme and round-the-clock pastoral care. The two-week options carry the Level 3 Award in Work Experience and Career Planning, worth eight UCAS points, assessed online after the programme and followed by a personalised certificate and an industry reference letter.
