More about this camp

The Global Futures Pre-University Summer School is Durham University's own residential programme for international students aged 16-17 who are considering a UK university and want to try subjects before choosing a degree. The academic core is 24 hours of instruction delivered by Durham academics. Taster sessions run in small seminar groups, are interactive and discussion-based, and are designed to feel like undergraduate study rather than school lessons: students are encouraged to share ideas, ask questions and approach a topic from several perspectives. Tasters are drawn from three faculties - Arts and Humanities, for example English, History and Music; Science, for example Computer Science, Engineering and Physics; and Social Sciences, for example Anthropology, Geography and Sociology. Taster subjects may change depending on staff availability. Students live for nine nights in en-suite Durham University college student accommodation, and breakfast, lunch and evening meals are provided daily. Around the timetable there is a welcome event, team-building, a games night, access to the University sports centre and a farewell dinner. Full-day trips include travel, meals and entry to attractions, and there are further visits to local attractions in and around the city. Durham is a compact UNESCO World Heritage city in the north-east of England, which makes the college, the teaching spaces and the historic centre walkable from one another. Supervision is continuous. Residential staff live in the accommodation, there are sign-in procedures and evening curfews, staff are on duty overnight, and trained pastoral staff are available at all times; all staff follow university safeguarding procedures. Entry requires a minimum of B2 English, and the application asks for a short personal statement, parent or guardian consent, and a recommendation from a school counsellor or teacher. Places are limited and are reviewed holistically, with the aim of forming a diverse international cohort. Students arrange their own travel to the UK; arrival guidance follows acceptance, and the most convenient airports are Newcastle International, Manchester and London Heathrow. Please confirm details directly with the camp provider before making travel arrangements.
