More about this camp

This Embassy Summer centre is based at Newcastle University, in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne in north-east England. It accepts students aged 12 to 18. Programme and activities. The course listed is a General Language Course. Newcastle offers a different England from the Oxford-and-Cambridge circuit that dominates this catalogue: a working northern city with its own strong cultural identity, historic landmarks and, as the provider notes, a reputation for friendliness. For a student who wants to meet people rather than tour institutions, that is a real difference. Accommodation. Students stay in single en-suite rooms within Newcastle University's secure student residences at Kensington Terrace, equipped with a desk. Single en-suite accommodation gives each student privacy, and the residences are described as secure. As with any university setting, families should ask what supervision applies outside teaching hours, particularly for a student at the younger end. Ages, dates and duration. The centre accepts students aged 12 to 18. The upper limit reaches past school-leaving age, so families should ask how the youngest and oldest are separated for teaching, accommodation and evenings. One session is currently listed, beginning at the end of June; the full calendar should be confirmed with the provider. Location and travel. Newcastle University sits in the city centre. Newcastle International Airport is around twenty minutes away by metro, and London is roughly three hours by train. Transfer arrangements are not published. Who the programme may suit. This centre may suit families who want a UK city outside the crowded and more expensive south-east, and students who would rather experience everyday British life than a tourist itinerary. The single en-suite rooms and central location are practical advantages. Families set on Oxford, Cambridge or London have Embassy centres in all three, so the choice here is genuinely about the kind of city rather than the programme.
