About

About the Course

Academic Summer created the UK’s first specialist summer programme of this kind and has offered Get Ready for Medicine for ten years. The course is two intensive weeks for students who are seriously considering medicine: practical laboratory work including heart and lung dissections, a whole-day clinical workshop with a doctor, clinical workshops and scenarios, infectious diseases, immunology and neuroscience, medical ethics, an Emergency First Aid qualification, UCAT familiarisation, personal statement planning and interview practice, medical trips and a university visit. It finishes with a research project presented to a panel of experts and peers, and leads to a CPD qualification. Every student also takes Be a Leader, which leads to a second CPD qualification.

What’s Included

The school offers a special discount — ask us for details. The published price is for the whole two-week course, not for a week: the course is sold as a fixed two-week block and the dates on this card are the window inside which the two-week courses run. The price shown here is the residential one; the school also sells a non-residential day place on the same course, and that option is not represented by this card. The residential fee includes tuition, accommodation, meals, insurance, airport transfers, trips and activities.

Accommodation

Residential students stay in single ensuite rooms at DLD College, with a limited number of twin rooms. Accommodation and classrooms are in the same building, so there is no commuting. The management team and camp counsellors live on site.

Meal Plan

Full board for residential students: breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the college dining room, which prepares meals on site. There is also a coffee shop in the building.

Activities & Excursions

Afternoons and evenings are given to London. The school names the Tower of London, a football stadium, museums, evening trips and theatre shows among its weekday destinations; at weekends the programme goes further, to Oxford, Windsor, Brighton, Cambridge and Thorpe Park. Sundays are kept for rest and for Westminster itself.

Facilities

DLD College, London is purpose-built and entirely under one roof: modern classrooms including dedicated Art and Drama spaces, well-equipped science laboratories, a spacious atrium and social areas, a modern dining room with an on-site coffee shop, single ensuite bedrooms, and campus-wide WiFi.

Camp Experience

The building stands on Westminster Bridge Road, directly opposite the Houses of Parliament and overlooking the Thames; Big Ben is visible from inside. The school says students come from over sixty countries.

More about this camp

Get Ready for Medicine is Academic Summer’s specialist pathway for students aged 14 to 17 who want to find out whether medicine is for them — and to arrive at a medical school application better prepared than their peers. The school created the UK’s first specialist summer programme of this kind and has run this course for ten years. The course lasts two intensive weeks. Students carry out practical laboratory work, including heart and lung dissections, and explore infectious diseases, immunology, neuroscience and the role of technology in medicine. A whole day is given to a clinical workshop with a doctor, alongside further clinical workshops and scenarios. Students take an Emergency First Aid qualification, work through medical ethics, plan their personal statement, practise interviews and look at the UCAT. There are medical trips and a university visit. At the end, each student presents a research project on a topic of their own choosing to a panel of experts and to their peers. The minimum level of English published by the school is B2 on the CEFR, and the maximum class size is 12. Every student also takes part in Be a Leader, which runs through the programme and leads to a second CPD qualification: professionals from medicine, business, law and beyond share their own journeys, and students take psychometric, aptitude and career tests that produce a personalised My Career Choice report. The base is DLD College on Westminster Bridge Road, directly opposite the Houses of Parliament. Accommodation, classrooms, laboratories and dining are all in the same purpose-built building.
