A three-week residential academy at the University of Pennsylvania for high school students. The whole programme is built around one subject — biomedical research, chemistry research, economics, experimental physics research, global culture and media, microbiology and infectious diseases, neuroscience research, or writing and research in the age of AI. Academies are led by University of Pennsylvania faculty and long-standing professionals in their field, with support from graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants, and they fuse scientific or social theory with the applications that go with it: the science academies use Penn's laboratories and research technology, the humanities academies use the history of Philadelphia itself. Students live in a Penn residence hall in the University City district and are supervised throughout. The programme is non-credit, and students who complete it receive a Certificate of Completion and may request letters of recommendation from their Penn instructors.

About

About the Course

One subject, three weeks, taught intensively. Each academy pairs sophisticated theory with the work that follows from it — laboratory experiments and Penn's own research technology in the science academies, the archives and institutions of Philadelphia in the humanities ones. Teaching is by University of Pennsylvania faculty and established professionals in the field, assisted by graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants. The academy is non-credit: what a student leaves with is a Certificate of Completion and, on request, letters of recommendation from the Penn instructors who taught them.

What’s Included

The programme fee covers use of Penn academic facilities, on-campus housing, gym access, linens, the meal plan, extracurricular activities and trips, and student supervision. It does not cover the non-refundable application fee, travel to and from campus, airport transfers, class materials, meals eaten off campus, medical expenses, laundry supplies, souvenirs or personal spending money. A non-refundable enrollment deposit secures the place and is counted as part of the total programme fee, so the final bill is adjusted for it.

Accommodation

Students live on campus in a Penn residence hall for the length of the academy, in the University City district where the University sits. Linens are provided with the room, and the fee includes gym access alongside the housing. Residential students are supervised by programme staff; after-hours emergency or urgent care is provided nearby at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Meal Plan

A meal plan on campus is part of the programme fee. Students eat in Penn's dining facilities; the SHOP PENN district next to campus adds more than ten blocks of cafés and restaurants within walking distance, though meals eaten off campus are paid for separately.

Activities & Excursions

Extracurricular activities and trips are part of the programme and are included in the fee. Philadelphia is used as the setting rather than a backdrop: the humanities academies draw on the city's history directly, and students have the run of Penn's galleries, performing arts centres, outdoor art and the 24-acre Penn Park. A self-guided campus tour is available to work through in free time.

Facilities

Students use the University's own resources: library facilities, fitness centres, galleries and performing arts centres, laboratories and research technology in the science academies, and Penn Park. At the centre of campus stand the Quadrangle and College Green, the University's most used outdoor space. The Division of Public Safety runs police, fire and emergency services for the campus and provides 24/7 walking escorts.

Camp Experience

Three weeks of living and studying inside a research university, in a cohort drawn from around the world. Mornings and afternoons belong to one subject taught by the people who work in it, and the rest of the day belongs to a campus in the middle of University City — restaurants, shops, parks, cafés, libraries and museums, all walkable. Students finish with a certificate, a subject explored further than school allows, and a clearer idea of what a university actually feels like.

2026 price

A single-subject academy taught on Penn's campus over three weeks. Eight academies are offered: Biomedical Research, Chemistry Research, Economics, Experimental Physics Research, Global Culture and Media, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Neuroscience Research, and Writing and Research in the Age of AI. A student takes one of them. Teaching is by University of Pennsylvania faculty and long-standing professionals in the field, with graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants in support.

Taught on campus for three weeks. The school does not publish a lesson count or lesson length for the academies; the figure recorded here is the catalogue default for an academic programme whose hours are not published (owner decision of 11.10). Classes are subject-intensive and run across the day, combining theory with laboratory or field application depending on the academy chosen.

One subject, studied intensively. The science academies use Penn's laboratories, research technology and the resources of the University; the humanities academies use Philadelphia itself — its history and institutions — as the material. Entry is by school year rather than by language or subject level, and the academy ends with a Certificate of Completion.

More about this camp

The 3-Week Summer Academies are run by Penn Arts and Sciences High School Programs on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia. They are residential and non-credit, and they are built on a simple idea: a student takes one subject and stays with it for the whole programme, in the company of people who work in that subject professionally. Eight academies are offered. The science side covers biomedical research, chemistry research, experimental physics research, microbiology and infectious diseases, and neuroscience research; these use Penn's own laboratories and research technology, so the work is hands-on rather than lecture-only. The humanities and social science side covers economics, global culture and media, and writing and research in the age of AI; these draw on the archives and institutions of Philadelphia itself. Teaching is by University of Pennsylvania faculty and long-standing professionals in their field, with graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants in support. The academies are open to students currently in the ninth to eleventh grade, which is roughly ages fourteen to seventeen. International students are welcome; a tourist or B-2 visa is required. Students live in a Penn residence hall in the University City district and are supervised throughout, with the meal plan, gym access, linens, extracurricular activities and trips included in the programme fee. The programme carries no academic credit. Students who complete it receive a Certificate of Completion and may request letters of recommendation from the Penn instructors who taught them. Scholarships are available to students attending a School District of Philadelphia public or charter high school. Dates, prices and availability may change.
