This programme is designed for motivated students with an advanced or native level of English who wish to prepare for university-level study in psychology or related social sciences. Based at the prestigious St. Hilda's College, part of the University of Oxford, the course offers students the opportunity to be taught Psychology at a first-year undergraduate level within a prestigious Oxford University setting. Through workshops, discussions, and research projects, students develop skills in critical thinking, data analysis, and essay writing, providing ideal preparation for university-level psychology or related fields.
The programme offers 23 hours of tuition per week, delivered in small classes with a maximum of 12 students to ensure individual attention and active participation. Teaching is conducted at a first-year undergraduate level, combining theory with practice to help students explore how psychologists analyse emotions, cognition, and social interaction. Students learn through lectures, seminars, small group tutorials, workshops, and research projects, with a focus on developing both subject knowledge and academic communication skills in a university-style learning environment.
The curriculum explores core psychological perspectives, from cognitive and biological to behavioural, psychodynamic, and humanist approaches. Key subject areas include Foundations of Psychology (understanding the scope of psychology and its different schools of thought), Core Debates (nature vs nurture, free will vs determinism, and reductionism vs holism), Cognitive & Social Psychology (models of memory, eyewitness testimony, conformity, obedience, and social influence), Development & Attachment (childhood development and attachment theory through classic and contemporary studies), Psychopathology & Treatment (defining mental disorders, clinical perspectives, and therapeutic approaches), and Research Methods & Ethics (how psychologists design studies, collect and analyse data, and address ethical challenges). The course includes guest lectures by renowned scholars, university preparation masterclasses, small group tutorials, and debate society sessions. Students are eligible to be awarded 8 UCAS Tariff Points on completion of the programme and receive a personalised report card, Bucksmore certification, and a Letter of Recommendation available on request.
