Camp Waziyatah

Camp Waziyatah is a co-ed overnight summer camp in southern Maine's lakes region, on 130 acres of woods and field bordering a private 3.5-mile lake. It takes boys and girls aged 6 to 16 in age-appropriate divisions — The Pines for the youngest, then The Hill, The Grove, The Ridge and The Ledge — with more staff for the younger campers. Campers choose their own activities each week across adventure trips, performing and visual arts, athletics, the waterfront and a full riding programme that is included in tuition. The camp is about 50 miles from Portland and roughly three hours from Boston by car, and was the filming location for the Disney Channel series Bug Juice. Phones, tablets, e-readers and video games are not allowed. Registered nurses staff the health centre 24 hours a day, and hospitals are less than 20 minutes away. Directors Gregg and Mitch Parker, lifelong campers and staff, own and run the camp; roughly nine in ten campers are American and one in ten international, and counsellors come from across the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.
