Camp Walden (Maine)
Camp Walden is an overnight summer camp for girls in Denmark, Maine, founded in 1916 and still guided by the fourth-generation descendants of its female founders alongside professional camp leadership. The property is a pine forest circling part of Sand Pond, about an hour's drive from Portland, Maine. Community, leadership and tradition shape camp life: the oldest campers hold leadership roles - planning evening activities and special events, captaining team sports, leading songs and weekly campfires - and pass those responsibilities on to younger girls. Campers live in spacious wooden bunks among the pines and take part in five activity periods a day, from swimming, canoeing, sailing and waterskiing to tennis, lacrosse, horseback riding, arts and drama.
