friLingue St. Bernard Autumn — Language Camp in Liddes, Valais

friLingue runs its autumn camp from Relais de Dranse, a renovated chalet the school owns in Liddes, a village in the Val d'Entremont on the historic route towards the Great St. Bernard pass. The house sits by the Dranse river, away from through traffic, with the Combe de l'A nature reserve beginning almost at the door. Lessons, meals and free time all happen in the same building, which keeps the day simple for younger participants and keeps staff close to everyone. The camp is open to children and teenagers aged nine to seventeen. Each participant chooses one language — French, English or German — and follows it for the whole stay. Classes run Monday to Friday in two morning blocks, twenty lessons a week in total, in groups that average around six students. Placement follows an oral test on arrival, and every level from beginner to proficient is accepted. Teachers work through role play, drama, games and audiovisual material rather than textbook drill, which suits a short stay: the language has to be usable by the end of the week, not just studied. Afternoons and evenings belong to the mountains. The weekly programme includes three excursions and two workshops, with trips to Sion, across the border into the Aosta valley, up to a mountain reservoir and around the surrounding alpine villages. Evenings run to sports tournaments, a treasure hunt, karaoke, a casino night, film nights and a disco. Because Swiss and international participants are mixed into the same groups, the language keeps working outside the classroom, which is usually where the progress actually shows. Participants sleep in dormitory rooms in the chalet. Smaller rooms are available for a supplement, and families who want deeper immersion can ask for a host family placement instead. Full board is included and served in the house; special diets such as gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan or halal can be arranged on request. The camp fee also covers tuition, the excursion and activity programme, and supervision around the clock. Several extras can be added to a booking. Intensive afternoon classes give additional language time in smaller groups, and there are courses in horse riding and tennis, plus a coding and pixel art workshop offered in selected weeks. For travel, friLingue offers accompanied transfers from Geneva airport, accompanied train transfers from Zurich and Bern, and an unaccompanied minor service for students flying alone. The autumn season is short: a handful of Sunday start dates in September and October, with stays of one to four weeks depending on how late in the season the participant arrives.
