AIS Salzburg Summer Language Program for Ages 12 to 18

The AIS Salzburg Summer Language Program is a residential summer camp for teenagers, run on the campus of the American International School - Salzburg in the Austrian Alps. It combines intensive language study in the mornings with a full programme of activities, excursions and adventure in the afternoons, evenings and at weekends. The camp is open to students aged 12 to 18, and younger siblings may attend only when registered alongside an older sibling able to accompany them. Students choose between intensive English and intensive German. Lessons run in small groups from 8:30 to 12:45 from Monday to Friday and are taught by the school's own teaching faculty. Three to four levels are offered in each session, and every participant takes a short assessment at the start so that they join a group matched to their ability, so students do not need to know their level before arriving. Teenagers who complete the full six-week programme can earn high school credit, which makes the camp a practical option for families who are also considering the school's academic year programme and want their child to see the campus first. The afternoon and weekend programme makes full use of the setting. On the adventure side, students go rafting and canyoning, tackle high ropes courses and ziplines, and hike through Alpine gorges such as the Lammerklamm. On the cultural side, the programme takes in summer festivals, concerts in the Mirabell Gardens, baroque architecture, museums, and the walk up to the Salzburg Fortress. Saturdays are given over to cultural day trips and Sundays combine adventure canyoning with free time. Weekend excursions reach destinations within roughly three hours of Salzburg, including Munich, Vienna, Innsbruck, Werfen and Linz, travelling on Austria's public transport network. Between organised activities there is time to wander through the old town, swim in the freshwater lakes nearby or try summer sledding. Participants live on campus in the school's dormitories, in double, triple and quad rooms that each have their own shower and toilet. Professional resident staff live on every floor and are responsible for supervision, guidance and pastoral care outside academic hours; the same team organises and leads the trips and activities. Full board is provided, with lunch immediately after morning lessons and dinner in the early evening, and the activity programme fits around the meal times. Sessions last two weeks each and can be combined into stays of four or six weeks. The programme fee covers instruction, boarding, all meals, the whole activity and excursion programme and local transport, so families need to budget only for pocket money and travel to Salzburg. A day-student option is also offered for families based in the area, and a sibling discount applies when more than one child from a family attends. Salzburg gives the camp much of its character: Mozart's home city, a filming location for The Sound of Music, and a compact base surrounded by mountains, rivers and lakes. For many students the camp is a first extended stay away from home, and the combination of small teaching groups, an international peer group and resident staff on site is designed to make that manageable.
