Zigotours Iceland Autumn Nature Camp - Volcanoes and Geysers

Iceland sits just below the Arctic Circle, and few destinations make the point as quickly. Within a short drive of the capital there are active geothermal fields, a rift valley where two continental plates pull apart, and waterfalls that drop straight into fissures in the rock. This camp is built around that concentration: a seven-day autumn trip for young people aged 12 to 17, based in the Reykjavik area, run by the French operator Zigotours. The week opens with the capital. Reykjavik means the smoky bay, and it feels more like a spread-out provincial town than a capital, dotted with lakes. The group visits the Perlan museum with its artificial ice cave, walks the historic centre, and spends time in a geothermal swimming pool with slides and a sauna. There is bathing in the warm tubs set on the Reykjavik shoreline, and a stop at the Secret Lagoon, one of the older bathing places on the island. Autumn adds a boat trip out into the bay in search of whales - not guaranteed, as the operator itself notes, but a real possibility in these waters. The centrepiece excursion is the Golden Circle. Thingvellir National Park is a geological rarity, the place where the North American and Eurasian plates separate, and it has served as a filming location for a well-known television series. Gullfoss is a large waterfall that pours into a fault in the ground. Geysir gives its name to every geyser in the world. The last outing is an easy four-hour trek through the Reykjadalur valley, with viewpoints along the way and a swim in a river running at around 38 degrees at the end of it. Accommodation is a youth hostel with single-sex dormitories of four to ten beds. Showers and bathrooms are shared and sit outside the rooms; the group has a collective kitchen and a common room used for activities. All meals are included: breakfasts at the hostel, packed lunches for the day out, and dinners the group prepares together with its leaders. The operator calls this a co-managed camp, and it is a deliberate part of the trip rather than a way of cutting costs - participants take a share in how the week runs. The trip is supervised by a qualified director and camp leaders at a ratio of about one adult to eight young people, with a minimum of twelve and a maximum of twenty-four participants. Return flights on scheduled airlines between Paris and Reykjavik are part of the package, and travel on the ground is by public transport. Families departing from a French regional city rather than Paris can add a departure-city option from the extras list. The camp suits teenagers who like the outdoors and are curious about how landscapes are made. No previous trekking experience is needed - the walking is described by the operator as easy - but an Icelandic autumn is cold, wet and windy by turns, and proper layers matter more here than the packing list suggests.
