Egypt Pharaohs Camp for Teenagers - Cairo, Aswan and Luxor

A touring programme rather than a school: there are no lessons and no entry level to meet. The route is the curriculum. In Cairo the group works through the historic centre and the Egyptology museum, where the mask of Tutankhamun is displayed, then approaches the Pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza with a French-speaking guide who explains what is being looked at. Aswan brings Nubian culture, the temple of Philae, a walk on Elephantine Island and a spice souk. The Nile is travelled by felucca, the traditional sailing boat, from Aswan down to Kom Ombo. Luxor closes the trip with Karnak, the Temple of Luxor and the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, visited with an Egyptologist. The operator has been running trips to this destination since the beginning of the nineties and says openly that the balance it aims for is between cultural visits and an honest view of the country as it is today.

The price covers the return flight from Paris, full board, complete supervision, accommodation, all transport within Egypt, the activities listed in the programme, repatriation and personal accident insurance, and the educational and administrative follow-up before and after the trip. Personal spending, drinks outside meals, visa fees unless stated otherwise, vaccinations and other administrative formalities, activities outside the programme, optional extras, cancellation insurance and the operator's fixed-price option are not included. Joining the group from a French city other than Paris carries a published supplement, listed separately under extras.

Nights are spent in simple hotels the operator calls guest houses, in rooms of two to four with a bathroom in the room. One night is spent in bivouac aboard a traditional sailing boat on the banks of the Nile, and two nights in a sleeper-train cabin between the cities of the itinerary. Rooms are shared between participants of the group.

Full board is included. Meals are taken in small local restaurants along the route, which is a deliberate part of the programme rather than a cost saving - the stated aim is that participants meet the country through its ordinary places. Drinks outside meals are not covered.

Guided visits to the Egyptology museum in Cairo, the Giza plateau, the temple of Philae, Karnak, the Temple of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings; a walk through the old quarters of Cairo and the former Jewish quarter; a spice souk and a Nubian evening in Aswan; a walk on Elephantine Island; and navigation down the Nile aboard a felucca, with a night spent on board.

This is a moving programme, so there is no single campus. Accommodation is in guest houses with rooms of two to four and private bathrooms. Transport within Egypt uses local and private services that meet the country's safety standards, and the felucca and sleeper train are themselves part of the route rather than an add-on.

Groups are small by design: twelve participants at minimum, twenty-four at maximum, with one qualified director or activity leader for every eight young people. The programme suits teenagers who want to see the great pharaonic sites with someone who can explain them, and who are ready for a trip that moves - four bases, a night on a boat and two nights on a train. Participants need a valid passport or national identity card in sound physical condition, a signed exit authorisation, a European Health Insurance Card and a signed health form.
