Emory Pre-Med Institute: three weeks inside medicine

The From Science to Medicine curriculum introduces foundational sciences relevant to healthcare, including biology, chemistry, and anatomy. It connects theory with practice through medical case studies, trauma scenarios, diagnostic work, laboratory-style activities, site visits, and physician-led learning. The course experience emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and understanding clinical concepts and patient care.

The institute includes academic coursework, clinical and medical-learning experiences, physician-led workshops, research labs, health-profession panels, college-preparation seminars, and social community activities. Scholars who successfully complete the institute receive a certificate of achievement, a personalized letter of recommendation, and a medical-school preparation toolkit.

Scholars may live in designated on-campus residence halls or participate as commuters. Residential students are supervised by trained Resident Advisors who are current Emory students and who foster a supportive, engaging community environment. Students have access to campus spaces that support both independent living and university community participation.

The daily campus experience includes meals at dining halls and campus cafés, with time for students to connect with peers between academic and hands-on activities.

Co-curricular opportunities include physician-led workshops, research labs, health-profession panels, college-preparation seminars, social activities, small-group outings, evening events, field trips, and sports activities. Site visits may introduce scholars to Emory Clinics, Grady Hospital, medical simulation environments, and imaging centers.

Scholars use Emory campus facilities including residence halls, dining halls, libraries, and recreational centers. Academic experiences may also connect students with clinical settings, simulation labs, and high-technology medical imaging environments associated with Emory and its healthcare partners.

Classes and workshops are led by Emory faculty physicians, including Dr. Isaiah Rolle and Dr. Brandon Dixon, who bring medical practice, research, teaching, and mentoring experience. The institute is built to help aspiring healthcare professionals learn directly from physicians, residents, and fellows while experiencing the academic and social dimensions of university life.
