About

About the Course

Coláiste UISCE is an Irish college in the Mayo Gaeltacht where conversational Irish is taught through adventure. The traditional Gaeltacht option runs on every summer course and combines a strong focus on spoken Irish with water sports, building confidence, leadership and vocabulary together. Alongside it the college runs Diansraith intensive streams aimed at the aural, oral and State examination papers, with feedback reports issued to parents, and a youth leadership course for students who have completed Level 1. The college is the only Irish college accredited by both the Irish Sailing Association and the Irish Surfing Association, and its principals keep a completely Irish-speaking environment with a clear discipline system.

What’s Included

The school offers a special discount — ask us for details. The course fee covers tuition, accommodation, full board and the activity programme. Private coach transport to and from the college is offered from several Irish cities and is booked separately through the school; students travelling from further afield are met by the college bus. Registration takes place on the afternoon of arrival and dinner is served the same evening.

Accommodation

Students choose between the college's own residence at Cuan Eilí and a Bean an Tí host family. The residence sits on the water's edge of the Blue Flag beach and offers en-suite bedrooms sleeping four to six, built to Fáilte Ireland standards; students are supervised through the night and the course principal stays on site for the whole course. Bean an Tí houses are inspected and approved by An Roinn Gnóthaí Pobail, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta, give students a home-away-from-home setting with a local Irish-speaking family, and a private bus brings students to and from the college each day.

Meal Plan

Full board is included. Meals are prepared in the college's own HSE-approved commercial kitchen and served in a dining room with panoramic views over the bay; students staying with a Bean an Tí eat with their host family. Dinner is provided on the evening of arrival.

Activities & Excursions

Water sports run through the whole programme: the college holds accreditation from the Irish Sailing Association and the Irish Surfing Association, and has two on-site slipways giving direct access to the water. On land there are two seven-a-side soccer pitches, two basketball courts, an indoor climbing wall, a large archery room and a PE hall, and the Blue Flag beach is on the doorstep.

Facilities

The centre stands on the shore of Cuan Eilí and holds en-suite bedrooms, four classrooms, a spacious dining room, a commercial kitchen approved by the HSE, laundry and drying rooms, a PE hall, two seven-a-side soccer pitches, two basketball courts, an indoor climbing wall and a large archery room. Two slipways lead straight to the water. The site has a modern fire alarm system, CCTV and night supervisors.

Camp Experience

Everything at the college happens through Irish, and the staff ratio is higher than at any other Irish college so that the standard of Gaeilge holds. Students arrive from all over Ireland, courses are mixed with roughly an even split of boys and girls, and the combination of an Irish-only day with sailing, surfing and windsurfing is what students remember. A second campus in the village of Eachléim runs the same timetable with host-family accommodation.

More about this camp

Coláiste UISCE is an Irish college on the shore of Cuan Eilí in the Mayo Gaeltacht. Its summer Gaeltacht courses run in fortnights and a shorter late-August course, with Easter courses and Diansraith intensive streams for students preparing for the Junior and Leaving Certificate, and a youth leadership course for those who have completed Level 1. The traditional Gaeltacht programme blends conversational Irish with sailing, surfing and windsurfing; the college is the only one in Ireland accredited by both the Irish Sailing Association and the Irish Surfing Association. Students live either in the college residence, in en-suite rooms sleeping four to six with night supervision and the course principal on site, or with a Bean an Tí host family approved by the Gaeltacht department, travelling in by private bus. The centre itself holds four classrooms, a dining room over the bay, a PE hall, two soccer pitches, two basketball courts, an indoor climbing wall, an archery room and two slipways onto the water, with the Blue Flag beach immediately outside. A second campus at Eachléim runs the same timetable with host-family accommodation.
